YOU’RE IN THE ARMY NOW

So you’ve made it through the recruiting process and ADSC – well done. But that was the easy bit. What comes next is going to be somewhat tougher.

Whatever trade you’re going for and whatever qualifications and skills you bring with you, you aren’t much use to the Army until you can function as a soldier with a shared set of basic skills. You acquire these through training.

Initial training falls into two broad parts. Phase 1 training consists of the basic common military skills required by all recruits, whether soldiers or officers (with the exception of professionally qualified officers – doctors, dentists, lawyers, vets and so on) and is undertaken at one of the four Army Training Regiments (Bassingbourn, Lichfield, Pirbright, Winchester), the Army Foundation College at Harrogate, or, for officers, at Sandhurst; the exceptions to this are adult infantry recruits who do all of their training at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick. Phase 2 training is the specialist and technical training which trains soldiers for their chosen trade. This is sponsored by the individual regiments and corps and takes place within their own schools and training centres.
